Reflections on Dream

by Jan Shoop

Today’s Reflections post is on the word dream.

The Oxford Dictionary of Current English defines dream as:
1.  a series of images and feelings occurring in a person’s mind during sleep
2.  a long held ambition or wish
3.  a wonderful or perfect person or thing

Two of my favorite quotes that describe why we should dream:
“You see things; and say, ‘Why?’ But I dream things that never were; and I say, ‘Why not?”
George Bernard Shaw

“Keep your dreams alive. Understand to achieve anything requires faith and belief in yourself, vision, hard work, determination, and dedication. Remember all things are possible for those who believe.”
Gail Devers

Realizing Dreams
A dream is the first step in accomplishing our goals. Without a dream, nothing happens. Without dreams, our society stands still. When we start with a dream and visualize what could be, and add a little faith, our dream becomes a reality. However, dreams only become reality when we turn them into goals, actions and tasks. A great way to take a dream from idea to completion is by creating a “road map.”

Below are steps you can take to make your dream a reality:
1. Create a “road map” to accomplishing your dream.  Draw a circle in the middle of an 8½ by 11 piece of paper.  Use paper, colored pencils and markers.  Write your dream in the middle of the circle.

2.  Draw spokes out from the circle and add smaller circles to the end of each spoke.  In each of the smaller circles list a task you will need to complete.

3.  Draw spokes from each of the smaller circles. In each of those circles list the steps you will take to achieve your dream.

4.  Make a list of all the steps.  This is your “to do” list to accomplishing your dream.

5.  Pick one step that you can start tomorrow.

6.  Choose 6 items on your “to do” list to complete daily.
Tip:  Complete the hardest one first.

7.  Dream Realized!
