In 1790, the first session of the U.S. Supreme Court was established and held in the Royal Exchange Building in New York.

In 1884, the Oxford English Dictionary was first published. Today the Oxford English Dictionary is considered one of the most comprehensive and accurate dictionaries.

In 1917, during World War I German U-boat submarines resume unrestricted submarine warfare.

In 1942, during World War II the Japanese forces withdrew from Guadalcanal Island after being defeated by the marines.

In 2003, the space shuttle Columbia breaks apart while re-entering the atmosphere killing all seven crew members.
